Getting Started & Workspaces
How do I add a coffee bag and use the Smart Tracker?
›
Tap the Coffee tab, then the + button in the top right. You can enter details manually or tap Scan Label to use the camera. Point it at the bag label and the app will extract the origin, roaster, roast date, and process automatically.
Smart Bag Tracker: When creating a new bag of beans, you can specify your preferred low-stock alert threshold based on either weight remaining or percentage remaining to get notified before you run out.
How do I switch workspaces?
›
To separate your Home, Office, or Roastery setups, you can switch between workspaces using the dropdown at the top of the main app screen or at the top of the Settings menu.
What devices are supported?
›
Extraction Lab requires iOS 18.0 or later.
- All features: Any iPhone running iOS 18+.
- Local AI (on-device extraction): iPhone 15 Pro or newer (requires A17 Pro chip or later).
- Live Activities: iPhone with Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro+) or Lock Screen widgets.
- Apple Watch: watchOS 11+ recommended.
Do I need an account?
›
No account required. Everything works with your existing Apple ID. If you have iCloud enabled, your data syncs automatically across all your devices. If iCloud is off, data stays on-device only.
AI Label Scanning
What's the difference between Local AI and Cloud Vision?
›
Local AI (Gemma 4): Runs entirely on your iPhone 15 Pro or newer. No data leaves your device. Requires a one-time model download in Settings → Local AI.
Cloud Vision: Sends the label image to an AI provider (Anthropic Claude or OpenAI GPT) for parsing. Faster and works on all devices, but requires your own API key and an internet connection.
Rule-Based: A local fallback that uses text pattern matching. Works offline on all devices without any setup.
The label scan missed some fields. What should I do?
›
Tap any missed field to edit it manually after scanning. A few tips for better scan results:
- Hold the camera steady with good, even lighting — avoid glare on glossy bags.
- If the bag text is small, get closer and let the camera refocus before tapping Scan.
- Try switching extraction methods in Settings if one consistently misses certain fields.
Brewing
How does Guided Brew and Draft Recovery work?
›
Guided Brew walks you through your recipe in three phases: Setup, Live Timer, and Log.
Draft Recovery: If you close the app or your battery dies mid-brew, your draft is automatically saved. To recover it, just return to the Guided Brew screen—an alert will prompt you to "Resume Previous Brew" with your exact coffee data.
Can I monitor my brew outside the app?
›
Yes. The active timer automatically mirrors to Live Activities (Dynamic Island & Lock Screen) and the Apple Watch companion app, allowing you to monitor your brew hands-free.
How does Cold Brew tracking work?
›
When you start a cold brew, the app records the start time and runs a background aging timer. You'll receive a push notification when your brew reaches its target steeping time — no need to keep the app open.
Once brewing is complete you can mark it as ready or consumed, and log your tasting notes on the session detail screen.
How do I create a custom recipe?
›
Go to the Tools tab → Recipes → tap +. You can define:
- Brew method and target ratio (e.g. 1:15)
- Individual steps with names and durations
- Water temperature and grind size notes
The app uses your coffee dose and recipe ratio to calculate the exact water weight needed.
Data & Sync
My data isn't syncing between devices. What should I do?
›
Extraction Lab uses iCloud (CloudKit) to sync your data. To troubleshoot:
- Confirm iCloud is enabled on both devices: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Extraction Lab.
- Make sure both devices are signed in to the same Apple ID.
- Check your iCloud storage isn't full.
- Force-quit and reopen the app on both devices to trigger a sync.
- If issues persist, toggling iCloud for the app off and on can reset the sync state.
How do I back up or export my data?
›
Go to Settings → Export Data. You can export your full library as a JSON backup file, which you can save to Files, share to another app, or email to yourself.
You can also export individual coffee bags or brew sessions from their detail screens via the share icon.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
›
Local data is deleted with the app. Data stored in iCloud persists in your iCloud account. If you reinstall the app and sign in with the same Apple ID, your data will sync back automatically.
To fully delete iCloud data, go to iCloud.com → Manage Storage → Extraction Lab → Delete Data after removing the app.
